Crete has a beautiful spring, long hot summer and warm autumn so choose the time of year according to your seasonal preferences; this island offers beauty and romance throughout the year.
What day of the week and time do people get married?
Although you can marry on any day, it is normal in Crete to hold weddings on a Friday or Saturday. Civil weddings must be on a weekday. Crete in summer is extremely hot and weddings tend to be held at either 7.00 pm or even 8.00 pm. In July or August, we would suggest a ceremony at 7.30 pm which should avoid the intense heat of the day! Since it does not get dark until late during the summer months, this should not affect your wedding day photographs.
How long is the Greek civil ceremony?
In Crete, the formal part of a civil ceremony is very short, literally less than five minutes.
Is it traditional to decorate the bridal car?
Yes, and since you can choose from a Cabriolet to a limousine you can be sure you will arrive in style!
Will we have an order of service then for our guests?
When you are married we will provide copies of this order of service as requested and a personalised “certificate of marriage” in addition to the legal paperwork.
Can I get married in Church in Crete?
The options for a Church wedding in Crete are limited to the Greek Orthodox Church, but for these weddings one of the parties must be baptized in the relevant religion.
So is the choice only the local town hall?
With Weddings in Crete, there are many other options for a civil ceremony – a Turkish fort makes a stunning venue with views of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and of beautiful Souda Bay, or you may choose to marry on the beach, in the hotel of your choice or your holiday villa, if suitable.
So will I get dressed up in a beautiful white dress for a less than five minute ceremony?
Not if you let Weddings in Crete organise your day. The exchanging of personal vows or declarations, readings or the performance of music by your guests can be a lovely way of personalising your wedding.Weddings in Crete will provide you with our own order of service suggestions, together with some suggested readings and choices of music.
Who organises our reception?
We do. Your reception can be as formal or informal as you like. We at Weddings in Crete are happy to work with you to find exactly what suits you and your wedding party – whatever size it may be.
What kind of menu could we expect to get at a Taverna reception?
A typical Cretan wedding meal would be a starter cold plate of mixed appetizers (e.g. stuffed vine leaves, cheese pies, meatballs, Cretan cheese, salad, olives) followed by roasted lamb/pork with potatoes, served with Greek salad. Vegetarian options for the main meal are of course available.
Will I have to organise all the translations?
We have found that it is sometimes more economical for translations to be arranged in Crete so we have added this as an extra service available to all our clients. You provide the original documents and we organise translations.
Can we go for a traditional Greek style party with music, dancing and lots of local wine?
We have a number of restaurants and Tavernas we work with; you can choose from a VERY old-style Cretan Taverna to a high standard exclusive restaurant. We can offer you several options to consider according to your taste and of course your budget.
I want to get married in Crete but I would like the reception to be at my villa, is this possible?
We can organise the catering of your reception at your villa or holiday home for whatever number of guests you have, working with the best caterers and cake specialists in Chania.
We want to invite a number of guests, but they will all have different needs. How can we organise this?
Weddings in Crete can provide you with a list of accommodation of all kinds in the area you choose to stay. This can range from hotel or apartment accommodation, villas with pools or just simple rooms.
As we will be a big party, we want to have our Hen and Stag nights in Crete. Can you help with this?
We can arrange for Stag or Hen nights, giving advice about where to eat, drink and club. We would give guidelines of where to go and make sure the party gets back to their accommodation!!
I would like to have my hair done properly for my big day; do you recommend a particular place?
Every bride wants to look her best … we can arrange appointments with an experienced and highly recommended hairdresser including, if you have special requirements, a rehearsal session. This can be at her salon or at your own accommodation.
What drinks would be served with the meal? And what about desserts
Wine of your choice would usually accompany the meal – ranging from barrelled village wine to bottles of your choice and budget. Usually as a dessert fresh fruit is served and/or ice cream. You could also choose to serve honey and nut baklavas.
